DO YOU HAVE A QUESTION ABOUT SICILY?
To reach Sicily, you have several options at your disposal. The fastest means is definitely the plane with 3 airports available, Palermo-Falcone e Borsellino, Catania-Fontanarossa, Trapani-Birgi.
The island can also be reached by ferry from Naples, Salerno, Genoa, Livorno and Civitavecchia or other Italian coastal cities. Ferries arrive mainly in Palermo, Catania, Messina, and Syracuse.
Sicily is one of the most beautiful islands in Italy that boasts the presence of magnificent beaches: definitely do not miss those of the Zingaro Reserve, in the territory of San Vito Lo Capo.
Also not to be missed is the beach of Calamosche, proclaimed the most beautiful in Italy in 2005, enclosed between two rocky promontories that make it perfect for snorkeling as the sea is always calm.
In the territory of Realmonte, in the Agrigento area, we find the stupendous cliffs of Scala dei Turchi, formed by a spur of white marl overlooking the sea. Also unmissable are the Aeolian Islands, including Lipari, Salina and Stromboli, and the Egadi Islands, with, for example, Favignana and Levanzo.
Sicily is also a place where the oldest history and poetry merge with myth, and you cannot miss visiting archaeological sites such as the Valley of the Temples, one of the most sacred places on the entire island, or Segesta, a spectacular theater overlooking a wide valley full of mystery.
For lovers of trekking, an excursion to Mount Etna, the highest of the volcanoes in Europe, is certainly not to be missed.
Finally, cities to visit include Modica and Ragusa Ibla, baroque towns that are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Also not to be missed are Messina, a splendid city nestled between Sicily and Calabria; Milazzo, a strategic port for the Aeolian Islands; and Cefalù, a picturesque town where you can stroll and discover the majestic Rocca and the wonderful Norman Cathedral.
Also not to be missed is the Vendicari Nature Reserve, with its pristine beaches, salt pans and rich bird life.
Sicily is an ideal destination where you can restore your body and spirit by sampling the many tasty local dishes. In fact, in addition to the production of fine wines, Sicily is also linked to many products from the sea and land.
As first courses we have to try pasta alla norma, seasoned with basil, tomato, ricotta and eggplant. Or pasta with sardines, cooked by adding raisins, pine nuts, anchovies, saffron, oil, salt and pepper.
Another specialty of Sicilian cuisine is definitely arancini, called arancini in the western part of the island and arancine in the eastern part: breaded and fried rice balls, filled with peas, tomato, butter, meat sauce or chocolate, depending on the alternatives.
One of the best-known Sicilian side dishes is caponata, born from a poor recipe, with ingredients that are as simple as they are delicious, namely fried eggplant, olives, celery, capers, onion, salt, sugar and vinegar, and with different additions depending on the various areas of the island.
Among desserts, it is impossible not to try cassata, a sponge cake decorated with fresh ricotta, marzipan, almond paste, sugar and candied fruit. Or the cannolo, an absolute must of Sicilian pastry, formed from a wafer of fried dough rolled up and filled with pistachio, chocolate or fresh ricotta. And to face the heat, you can't miss the granitas, which in Sicily are delicious and available in many flavors!
Several items can be found in Sicily to take home the memories and traditions of this wonderful island: the very famous Sicilian cart, miniature reproductions of what were the means of transportation between the 19th and mid-20th centuries, now made of wood and resin and abundantly decorated with bright shapes and colors.
The Sicilian tambourine, typical of folk tradition and used in southern tarantellas, consisting of a wooden or metal circle with several gaps, on which brass, sheet metal or silver saucers are mounted.
Design objects of all kinds, made of lava stone from Etna, which is both handy and very durable.
Moorheads, or ornamental vases representing the face of a man and a woman, which take their cue from a special love affair that arose between two young people at the time of Arab rule in Sicily. They are created using Caltagirone ceramics and hand-painted.
